OUR VISIT TO PARIS  by Christine Murphy

When we returned to Youthreach in September 2007 after our summer holidays our co-ordinator and two other teachers put it to us that we might like to go on a trip to Paris, which was going to be a part of our Leaving Cert applied French course.

This was a great opportunity for us so we all decided to go.  There were 14 students and 3 teachers going. It was decided to go from the 26th to the 29th February 2008.

There was much organising to do before we went.  Passports had to be arranged and we had to save up money to pay for the trip.

We had a very early start on the first day of our trip - we left at 5am.  Our flight left Dublin at 10.15am.  It was the first time flying for many of the group.  We arrived in Paris at 11.15am or 12.15pm French time.  There was a bus waiting for us which brought us to our Hotel - the Campanile Villejuf.

Sean had a busy programme for us to follow.  On the first evening, a walk around the centre of Paris and a night trip by boat on the river Seine.  Paris looks beautiful lit up at night.  We had our dinner in a nice restaurant in the city centre.  We arrived back at our hotel wrecked.  For the second day we had another busy programme. We visited the Louvre to have a look at the different sculptures and paintings.  This was fantastic, the artwork was done in great detail.  We saw the Mona Lisa and other amazing paintings.  In the afternoon we visited the Eiffel tower.  The lifts were very busy, so a group of us walked up to the second level and got a lift to the top.  It was lovely, the scenery was amazing and we took some brilliant pictures.

For the last day everybody was excited as we were going to Disneyland and shopping.  There were lots of different shops and a lot of things to visit.  We went on most of the rides and Space Mountain was the best.  People bought presents for their family and friends at home.

We arrived back at the hotel and we packed so we would be ready to go home early in the morning.  We arrived back in Dublin at 11am and got our school bus back home.  We all enjoyed the trip.  We would recommend Paris,it is a beautiful city.

POLISH EXCHANGE by Olga Spellman

Youthreach students from Ballaghaderreen recently hosted a group of young people from Libiaz in Poland.  The project was funded through Leargas.  The aim of the exchange, which was supported by the VEC, was for the young people to have fun whilst learning.  The groups have been planning for a number of months and the outcome was felt to be good by everybody that participated.

The program was based around social learning, looking at similarities in the cultures and how young people were much the same in both countries.  Libiaz was once a mining community.

While on the exchange the group visited places of interest including the Arigna Mining Experience, Lough Key Forest Park and Boyle town.  There was also day of arts and crafts in the Youthreach centre, where members of the group got to make Celtic design t-shirts or carve a design in bog oak.

Inviting Senator Frank Feighan and Cllr Luke ‘Ming’ Flanagan for an evening of discussion in young people and politics, was something organisers felt would be an interesting inclusion into the program.  They talked about how young people might participate politically at local and national levels, international and global levels were also talked about.  The young people also enjoyed it, although they were initially shy, some really relished the banner, a visit to the Dail was well received, unfortunately due to the schedule the House was not sitting.  The group had an excellent day visiting fine museums in Dublin and an exceptionally good trip to Kilmainham Jail.

The exchange was very valuable.  The leaders felt that they had accomplished what they intended to do - open the minds of the young people, encourage good hosting, develop tolerance, raise awareness and create new friendships.  The groups enjoyed the seven-day exchange.

The members of the Polish group were very impressed with friendliness and hospitality shown to them.
